⚡ Public EV Charging Cost — NZ

Work out what it would cost to charge an EV using only NZ wholesale power prices from the last year, if you always charged away from home. Adjust the margin to see what a public charging operator would need to charge to break even.

Your EV & Assumptions

NZ average EV ≈ 18–22 kWh/100km
NZ average ≈ 12,000–15,000 km/yr
Defensible NZ commercial figure: 10–14 c/kWh. ComCom blended network average is ~8.7 c/kWh; commercial sites add retailer margin + levies.

How this works: The wholesale figures are computed from 24.7 million half-hourly dispatch prices on the NZ Electricity Authority's EMI dataset (1 June 2025 – 24 June 2026, North Island, proxy prices excluded). 24-hour average: $0.00/MWh. 5–9pm evening-peak average: $0.00/MWh (1.00× the 24h average). The line/network charge is the default cost-base above wholesale, currently set to 12 c/kWh; a commercial public-charger site typically pays 10–14 c/kWh on top of wholesale (ComCom blended network average is ~8.7 c/kWh for year to 31 March 2025; commercial sites add retailer margin and levies). Margin is a simple markup on the cost base. Public-charging in NZ is dominated by long-trip "top-up on the road" use (EECA 2023 survey: 75%), so daytime/afternoon is more representative than overnight for this use-case — but the 5–9pm peak scenario is included as a worst-case bound.
